I feel so alone. I'm not even in the same hemisphere as my family and no one in the new country I am in wants anything to do with me. I'm in a relationship but only because he's there for me and I am so afraid of being completely and utterly alone. I have been on antidepressants for awhile now and my father was furious when he found out. It just isn't the way our family handles things. Naturally, I can't tell my parents how I feel. Not only would they consider it weakness they would worry and want me to leave my career abroad. I just don't want to bother anymore. Everyone else gets to opt out of me being in their life so why can't I?

Dear, I've been through what you're going through. Trust me, this moment of darkness will pass eventually. Firstly, please have faith in yourself, learn to be the best friend of yourself. The most important person that you need to have support from is yourself right now. So be good to yourself and take good care. You are stronger than you think - embrace this new transitional period in life. It can be overwhelming with so many new things to handle. As you say, there is a career future ahead of you. So focus your energy there, build up one thing first. One thing at a time. In the mean time, don't forget to call up your friends back home from time to time. Keep talking with them from time to time so you feel the warmth of friendship. After your career is a bit stable, find the time to socialise. Always bear in mind the realistic expectation of making friends in adulthood, especially when one's abroad - you'll always have many more acquaintances than people who you'd consider real friends. This is not your fault, this is the way socialising in the foreign world is. But don't despair, have some patience, look at the positive side of interactions. Don't let the bitterness deter you. Keep on looking for the right people to interact with. After some time, you'll find your best friends in this place. Don't give up yet. Please take good care. I hope you'll feel better soon.
