Well, I'm in my early 50's. My family was hit very hard by the recession, I was in the middle of my mortgage and the middle of raising my kids. They had to give up on any financial assistance for school etc.. There was a great deal of stress, lost our savings almost lost our home and went further into debt. The past four years were also the care and death of my parents, and also more financial burden regarding thier home and needs. Also, my youngest son is a special needs kid, born with a congenital syndrome and one of his most severe symptoms showed up in the last four years. My young adult older sons are struggling, strong and responsible kids getting laid off, missing long periods of income and healthcare ins etc..Furthermore, my surgery was the result of an accident that caused constant pain in the last four years.
In addition my siblings pretty much  abandoned my mother. She was living with us after a stroke last fall and passed away this spring in our home this Mothers Day. I guess this back story on the events in my life, certainly frame a depression, but I'v never been this unable to function.
Country: USA

Your experiences sound very distressing, and I can understand why you feel very depressed right now. Firstly, I must tell you something from personal experience: NEVER take antidepressants. EVER. They WILL ruin your mind, and take you to places you will regret for the rest of your life. There are effective nutritional and spiritual solutions which are better than even the most modern antidepressants.

I see you are from the United States. If you are able to afford it, visit your nearest pharmacist and buy the following:

1). St. John's Wort.

2). 5-HTP.

3). Omega 3 oil.

Take one of each of these each day, and you will begin to notice improvements within a couple of months. You might also wish to consider long walks (of the order of hours), if anything for a change in scenery that will take your mind off this terrible situation. As for your surgery, may I ask what kind of surgery it was, and the nature of the pain you are currently experiencing?

On the fish oils, try to take at least six everyday, unless you eat fish.  Your mind has hit a road block, lack of exercise will compound the problem.  You have to get past that door frame, don't think about it, just one step in front of the other.  The brain is like a recharge battery, you need to physically move in order for your mind to clear out all the pain.  I know it's hard, but now is the time to fight for your life - how badly do you want a better life.  Forgive your siblings and get in touch with them, everyone has their story, don't judge.  I wish you the best my friend, this is your life, take it back.

In reference to the other person's advice:

St Johns Wort and 5-HTP are both powerful drugs that can have a profound effect on the brain and the nervous system.

Yes they do work, but always do your own research or consult a doctor before using any kind of drug, particularly drugs which are known to directly manipulate your brain chemistry.  They also advised never to take antidepressants. Whereas they may believe this themselves, what works for them may not work for you.

I actually don't disagree with them on anything they say and would personally tend to lean in favour of the comment regarding antidepressants, but - check it out for yourself , make you your own mind and get professional advice.

Additionally, you may not be sick and you may not be in need of medical treatment of any kind. You have experienced a number of traumatic events and the natural reaction to that is pain. Like a physical injury - if you had somehow cut your hand open and you did not feel any pain, then wouldn't that be more of a problem? Perhaps you just need to go through a period of readjustment and mental healing? Just a thought. You can find free councillors and there are numbers on the site available, never be afraid to ask for help and a chat is just a chat.

Anon: Please take care in teling people to take some drugs and not take other drugs that can have a profound and long lasting effect on their mental health. It isn't your decision, and SJW + 5HTP are not weaker than SSRIs just because they are OTC. I have taken all three and of the three, for my brain chemistry, 5HTP was the most potent - to the point where regular dosing resulted in mild serotonin syndrome, which brings me to my next point - another reason you should be a bit more careful with advice is that you cannot always foresee the potential side effects of drugs.
