Simba: Owww… what was that for?
Rafeke: Its in the past it doesn’t matter
Simba: But it still hurts
Rafeke: Yes the past does hurt but you can either run from it or learn from it
There is so much to be learned from the Lion King. I mean yes its made for kids but there is so much insightfulness and intelligence to this movie. I think that’s why it is my favorite Disney movie. Its just like a great movie in so many ways. I mean its like there’s so much in it that there’s at least one part to the movie that I bet we all can related to.
Like blaming yourself for something that in reality wasn’t your fault. Just like Simba blamed himself for his fathers death when there was nothing he could do about that. Yet for a long time he believed it was all his fault. I know I’ve had things happen in the past that I blamed myself for. That’s normal especially when we’re kids. I for several years blamed myself for my parents getting divorced. It had nothing to do with me but as kids we don’t know that sometimes or can’t see it.
Timon and Pumba had quite a bit of wisdom in their Hakuna Matata philosophy. You can’t change the past this is very true. You must go on and live each day to the fullest possible. If you dwell on the past you’ll make yourself miserable in the present. I happen to think their philosophy has a lot of greatness to it.
But as we grow up we realize we have to be true to ourselves just like Simba finally had to recognize that he was the rightful king and be who he was born and not keep hiding. I mean we all have things happen to us that we don’t want to accept or face but if you run from things all you’re life you’ll never truly be happy. Simba discovered that and found strength to face his past and not run from it anymore. I think there’s an important lesson in that. I mean I for one had a hard time coming to terms with my sexuality cause I knew my family and those around me would likely hate me just for who I loved. But there comes a point in life when you have to live for yourself not others. You can’t please everyone but you can please yourself and live your life in such a way that makes you proud of the person you are.
When Simba returned home he saw that his home was a wasteland. As Timon noticed it was not much to fight for but Simba did it cause it was his home and his birthright to be king of that land. We have to stand up for what we believe in and those we care about cause if we don’t no one will. If you don’t like something take action don’t just sit back and whine and moan about it. Fight for what you want and believe in just like Simba fought for the pride land. It isn’t easy to know that those around you don’t approve of whom you love. I had to fight for my relationship with a woman so many times. And I wasn’t in love with her yet I still fought for it cause it was the right thing to do. Mom didn’t like that I was with a woman not one bit but you can’t back down to others. You just have to stand up for what you believe in and fight for that.
There’s just so much wisdom to this movie. Those are the main themes I see in it but there are others. I think music, books, plays, television, and movies are a great way to change the world. I for one am glad we live in a country that allows such freedom of expression, although its not a perfect society by any means it is a good one that in time will become better I think. There is a lesson to be learned in everything around us.
