I am no longer happy with my life and feel hopelessly lost in what to do! I feel like I am pushing everything I love away!

Hi there,

I just need someone to talk to.

I am 21 years old and have been a chef for 6 years now. Last year I moved away from my home town to go to the big city for better work opportunities, I was happy. But since I have moved, I have become very depressed and sometimes don't even know how to be happy. My job is very abusive and stressful and I am beginning to hate it so much that I dread going to work everyday. And on my days off I don't even leave my house, I just do nothing.

I feel like I can't talk to anyone because I feel like the few friends I have will get sick of hearing my problems. And I can't even talk to my mum any more because she seems kind of cruel rather than caring about my problems and then I get defensive and shut off.

I get really sad sometimes and just can't seem to be happy no matter how much I try. I don't want to push away my boyfriend because of this.

Any thoughts?

I believe you have already identified the problem. It is almost impossible for a gentle person to exist in an abusive work environment long term. The solution is to either change jobs locally or perhaps return home. Its not anything other than a lesson learned, not a failure. Good luck to you

Work should not suck the life out of you, especially at 20 years old. Better a crumb in peace than a feast in misery was the moral of the fable The City Mouse and The Country Mouse. If you really need the money or the experience then make a plan for six months or one year. Have a goal to stick it out and save towards getting out. Most places horrible to work for start at management and trickle down. Keep a current resume, network with customers and find more suitable employment. You are probably homesick as well. Find people with small town values to be friends with and hang with. Do simple things like cook dinner for each other. Cheaper than eating out and bars.

You know the beatiful thing about life is that is when it brings you down, it gives you the oppurtunity to prove yourself once again and and rise! See my point is, if you hate what you are doing? quit! Follow your passion :)  Start it small with a big dream in your mind, who knows you may be the next Bill Gates or Abraham Lincoln :) Pursue what makes you happy because there is a big difference between fulfilled and satisfied. Explore my friend, trust your instincts! Take a big leap of faith! I know you have this big dream in your mind right now while reading my comment, Stand up and start it! Remember that doubt has killed more dreams than failure! Try my friend and rest assured big things will come. Be Passionate in every way you can do it! Just do it! :)
